Hard Water in Cambridge: Your Supplier Isn’t Anglian (and Other Things Worth Knowing)
Two things surprise people about Cambridge water. First: your drinking water doesn’t come from Anglian Water — it comes from Cambridge Water. Second: at roughly 295–300 mg/L of calcium carbonate it sits right at the top of the “hard” band, close enough to the “very hard” line that it behaves like it in every way that matters to your boiler. Here’s what that costs you, and what’s genuinely worth doing about it.
Who Actually Supplies Your Water
This trips up more people than you’d expect, including plenty who’ve lived here for years. Cambridge Water supplies mains drinking water to the city and a good stretch of the surrounding area. Anglian Water handles the sewerage. Two bills, two companies, two different jobs — which is why so many people assume Anglian does both.
It matters for practical reasons. If you want a water quality report or a hardness figure specific to your address, you need Cambridge Water’s postcode lookup, not Anglian’s. And if you’re reading a guide that quotes “Anglian Water hardness” figures and applying them to a Cambridge address, you’re reading the wrong numbers — even if they land in roughly the same place.
Cambridge Water draws its supply from boreholes into the chalk aquifer beneath the region. That’s the source of the hardness: rain filters down through porous chalk, dissolving calcium and magnesium on the way, and comes back up carrying them.
How Hard Is It, in Numbers
Cambridge Water’s own published zone data puts the city’s supply at around 295 mg/L CaCO₃, and independent postcode-level data for CB1 gives a comparable figure of about 297 mg/L.
Where that sits on the scale
Soft: 0–50 mg/L. Moderately soft: 51–100. Slightly hard: 101–150. Moderately hard: 151–200. Hard: 201–300 — Cambridge is here, at the top end. Very hard: over 300. For comparison, the UK average is around 198 mg/L.
Being technically in the “hard” band rather than “very hard” is a distinction of about five milligrams. Don’t take much comfort from it. Cambridge water is roughly 50% harder than the UK average, and it scales kettles, shower heads and heat exchangers accordingly.

What It Does to a Boiler
The visible symptoms — furred kettle, cloudy glasses, white crust on the shower head — are annoying but cheap. The expensive damage happens inside the boiler, where you can’t see it.
A combi heats hot water on demand through a plate heat exchanger: thin metal plates with cold mains flowing past one side and hot heating water past the other. Push 297 mg/L water through that day after day and calcium carbonate deposits onto the hot metal as a hard crust. Scale insulates. An insulated heat exchanger is a contradiction in terms, so the boiler fires longer and hotter to compensate.
Commonly cited industry figures:
- Carbon Trust — a 1mm layer of scale raises the energy needed by about 7% for the same heat.
- British Water — roughly 12% efficiency loss at 1.6mm, up to about 25% at 3mm.
Those are indicative rather than exact, and they vary with water temperature and usage. But the pattern holds: in Cambridge, plate heat exchangers and diverter valves are among the first components to fail, and they’re among the priciest to replace.
One free change that slows scaling
Calcium comes out of solution faster the hotter the water gets, and the rate rises sharply above about 60°C. If your combi’s hot water dial is on maximum, turn it down to around 55–60°C. Costs nothing, slows scale, and usually lowers your gas bill slightly. One exception: if you have a stored hot water cylinder rather than a combi, it needs to reach 60°C to control legionella — leave that setting alone.
Victorian Terraces vs the New Developments
Cambridge has an unusually split housing stock, and hard water plays out differently across it.
Victorian terraces — Mill Road, Romsey, Petersfield, Newnham. Small bathrooms, original pipe runs that have been altered repeatedly over a century, and often a combi squeezed into a kitchen or loft. Long, narrow pipe runs that have scaled internally lose effective bore, which shows up as disappointing flow at the top of the house. When people blame the shower, the shower often isn’t the problem.
Post-war and 1960s–70s housing — Arbury, Kings Hedges, Cherry Hinton. Copper pipework at or past its design life, frequently combined with a heating system that has never been flushed. Scale plus decades of accumulated magnetic sludge is the classic combination behind radiators that are hot at the top and stone cold at the bottom.
New developments — Eddington, Trumpington Meadows, the CB1 quarter around the station. Modern plastic pipework doesn’t scale internally the way old copper does, and new-build owners often assume that means they’re immune. They aren’t. The boiler, the shower cartridge, the dishwasher and the kettle all see exactly the same water. A brand-new home protects the pipes, not the appliances — and it’s the appliances that cost money.
If You Rent — or If You’re the Landlord
Cambridge has a very large rented sector, and hard water sits awkwardly across the tenant/landlord line: the tenant lives with the symptoms, the landlord owns the assets being damaged.
If you’re renting, a softener isn’t your call — it’s a permanent plumbing alteration needing a drain connection and usually a power supply. What you can do costs very little: a filter jug for the kettle, a shower head you can unscrew and soak in descaler, descaling the kettle and washing machine regularly, and using dishwasher salt properly. Report kettling noises from the boiler to your landlord or agent in writing rather than living with them — that’s a maintenance issue and it gets worse.
If you’re the landlord, the sums are different. You’re the one replacing the boiler, the shower and the taps. In a house at 297 mg/L that’s a recurring cost, and it lands more heavily on an HMO where the shower runs several times a day. A magnetic filter and a properly dosed inhibitor are cheap; both reduce callouts. And whatever else you do, keep the annual Gas Safe service up to date — it’s a legal requirement for a let property, and it’s the appointment where scale gets spotted before it turns into a heat exchanger bill.
What Actually Helps
- Heating inhibitor, dosed correctly. The cheapest genuinely useful protection. Gets depleted whenever the system is drained for a repair or radiator change, and rarely gets topped back up. Protects your heating circuit only, not taps or drinking water.
- Magnetic filter. Catches circulating debris before it reaches the boiler. Nearly all manufacturers expect one now, and it’s cheap fitted alongside other work, expensive as a standalone visit.
- Descale the visible stuff on a schedule. Kettle, shower head, tap aerators. Unglamorous, and it genuinely extends their life.
- Under-sink filter. Better tea and coffee, longer kettle life. Does nothing for the boiler or the shower — be clear about what you’re buying.
- Whole-house softener. The comprehensive answer. Fits where the mains enters the house and swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium via a resin bed regenerated with salt. Every tap runs soft, no new scale forms in the boiler, cartridges and appliances last longer. Needs space near the stopcock, a drain connection and usually a socket — in a Victorian terrace with the stopcock under a fitted kitchen unit, that’s the part worth checking before you get attached to the idea.
Is a Softener Worth It in Cambridge?
Worth it if you own the property, you’re staying five years or more, and you’ve got a boiler worth protecting. It also makes a lot of sense for landlords with several local properties, where reduced callouts add up. Best value by far if you’re already having plumbing work done — a bathroom refit or a boiler replacement is the moment when adding one is cheapest, because the pipework is already open.
Less so if you’re renting, moving within a couple of years, or your stopcock is somewhere that turns a straightforward install into a joinery project. In a small Victorian terrace, space is a genuine constraint and it’s worth an honest look before committing.
What isn’t optional either way: an annual boiler service by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Mention you’re in a hard-water area so scale gets checked properly. It’s also a warranty condition — manufacturers typically require an annual service recorded in the Benchmark logbook, and a missed one can be grounds to decline a claim.
